THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN A POKEY ORTHODONTIC WIRE GOUGING YOUR CHEEK OR LIPS
Braces have come a long way over the years with improvements in technology and methods of treatment. Despite these changes and the best efforts of your orthodontist, pokey wires still happen sometimes. It doesn’t take much to have a wire wreak some havoc in your mouth – a wire as small as 1 millimeter can really irritate your cheeks or lips – so what can you do?
TUCK THE WIRE BACK INTO THE BRACES
Sometimes the solution to a pokey wire is as simple as taking your finger (wash your hands first of course) and pushing it back into place. If a piece of food catches the wire just right, it can pull the wire out a little but not force it all the way out of your braces. In this case, simply apply a gentle pressure to tuck it back into place. If the wire is out of the tube, you may be able to gently guide it back into place.
PLACE SOME WAX OVER THE AREA THAT IS IRRITATING
If you are unable to put the wire back into place or are not sure where it goes, then place some wax or cotton over the irritated area until you can have the wire professionally corrected in our office. This is why we give you wax at the beginning of your treatment, to get you through in a pinch.
TUCK THE WIRE TOWARDS THE TEETH AND AWAY FROM YOUR LIPS OR CHEEK
If the wax doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, you can try taking a pencil eraser and gently bending the wire away from the area of irritation so it rests against the teeth or gums where it won’t poke you. If none of these options seem to be doing the trick, please don’t hesitate to call one of our orthodontics offices in Phoenix or Scottsdale and we would be happy to help you get back on track.
