Braces Aftercare

Aftercare Tips After Having Your Braces Removed

Approaching the end of your orthodontic treatment is an exciting time! You are close to no longer needing adjustments or worrying about any wires poking out. When you schedule your braces removal at Budd Orthodontics, we prepare you for the unveiling of your beautiful smile. Here is what you should expect when you complete your orthodontic treatment.

After Braces Care

After you get your braces removed and begin wearing your retainer, you may feel some discomfort initially. When your braces are removed, your teeth are still stabilizing and want to drift back toward their original positions.  The retainer will prevent this but may feel tight initially.  It is encouraged to take a low-dosage over the counter pain reliever. You can also gargle with warm salt water to alleviate any swelling or pain.

Why is a Retainer Necessary after Having Braces?

A retainer can help maintain your teeth’s new position and fight against orthodontic relapse. Without proper retainer usage, your teeth can shift, putting you at risk for needing orthodontic treatment again later in life. There are many different types of retainers on the market, and Dr. Budd can help you choose the one that fits your lifestyle.

Can I Go Back to Eating Foods Like I Did Before Braces?

After you get your braces removed, we understand it’s highly tempting to eat the foods you couldn’t eat during orthodontic treatment. Gradually reintroduce them to your diet as you get used to your teeth again. Continue flossing after every meal to ensure no food particles get trapped in between your teeth while they settle in to their new position. We encourage you to continue to stay away from sticky, hard candies, as well as sodas. These have a dense amount of sugars and acids that can wear down your teeth, making them susceptible to other dental problems even without braces on.

Should I Whiten My Teeth After Wearing Braces?

Some patients may also want teeth whitening, as teeth can yellow over time. Talk with Dr. Budd about recommended whitening practices and the appropriate timing of whitening treatment.
